STOKES HILL WHARF PUMPHOUSE, NT

2001 saw Bennett Architecture engaged as lead consultant for the redevelopment of the Stokes Hill Wharf Pump House.

Originally built as part of naval refuelling operations at the wharf, the building was damaged during the bombing of Darwin in 1942.

With the wharf’s increasing popularity as a tourist destination, the owners wanted to convert the building into a restaurant and office building, as well as develop the adjoining land for public use.

Due to limitations caused by the building footprint and the historical importance of the area preventing traditional extension of the building, alfresco dining areas were cantilevered over the water to create a unique dining space that took advantage of the sea breezes and views across Darwin harbour.

The adjoining land was transformed into a nautical themed public park area, with walking paths and displays on the history of the area.
